The Yogathon first launched in 2005 when B.K.S. Iyengar visited New York City during his Light on Life book tour. He gave a special talk, in which he emphasized the importance of yoga in large cities and their surrounding areas, to dissipate the stress and tension of everyday life for their inhabitants. That year, senior teacher Mary Dunn conceived of “The Yogathon” to help ensure the longevity of our organization for years to come. Since then, it has become a legendary event — full of inspiration, extraordinary feats and fun that supports the mission and programs of the Iyengar Yoga Association of Greater New York and The Iyengar Yoga Institute of New York.
The Iyengar Yoga Institute of New York strives to be an oasis of learning the art, science and philosophy of Iyengar Yoga in New York City as well as the hub of our association for almost 30 faculty, over 125 association teachers, and upwards of 5,000 students alike throughout the three-state region of our charter. The Institute hosts guest teachers, offers daily classes, special series, workshops, special events, online and in-person to help ignite the flame of your practice and maintain your passion for learning.
